Choosing a reverse phone lookup in New Zealand

Most reverse lookup sites are the same small set of open listings behind different logos. On a New Zealand mobile they all return the same empty page, because those listings never contained mobiles. Here is what actually separates one from another.
Does it read NZ numbers as NZ numbers
A service built for the US will treat 021 as an area code and tell you nothing useful. A service that handles New Zealand knows 02x is a mobile range, knows 09 through 03 are geographic, and knows what 0900 costs you to ring back. If the results page talks about states or counties, it is not reading your number properly.
Does it tell you the line type
This is the single most useful field and the one thin services omit. Whether a line is a real mobile or a VoIP number is what turns an unknown call into a judgment: a caller claiming to be your bank from a VoIP line has a contradiction in it, and no name field will tell you that.
Does it show confidence
A result that presents a name flatly, with no indication of how sure it is, is presenting a guess as a fact. Numbers are reassigned, handsets are shared, and lines are registered to businesses rather than the person using them. A confidence level is what lets you weigh that, and its absence is a choice the service made.
Close the tab on any service claiming it will search dating apps directly, return private profiles, or show live location. None of that is possible legitimately, and a service lying about capability is not one to hand a payment to.
What honest looks like
An honest service tells you when it found nothing, rather than padding a report to justify the fee. It shows possible matches with confidence rather than asserting identity. It states plainly that results must not be used for credit, employment, insurance or tenancy decisions, because in New Zealand that is not what this data is for. Common questions
Why do so many lookup sites return nothing for NZ mobiles?
Because they draw on old public directories, which only ever listed landlines. A mobile was never in that data, so there is nothing to return.
Are free lookup sites worth trying first?
For a business number, yes, and an ordinary search engine does the same job. For a personal mobile they will not help, because the underlying data does not exist publicly.
Can a lookup be used to screen a tenant or an employee?
No. That is a regulated purpose and this is not regulated data. Results must not be used for decisions about credit, employment, insurance or tenancy.
