Key findings
- Wednesday is America's peak suspicion day: 2,869 lookups, versus 1,969 on Monday, the quietest day.
- The most-checked area codes are mid-size and rural markets: San Bernardino (909), Chattanooga (423), and Eugene (541) top the list. New York and Los Angeles codes do not crack the top 15.
- 40% of all lookups target a number someone else already checked, evidence that a small set of active campaign numbers drives a large share of the anxiety.
- 386 numbers were checked five or more times (averaging 7.3 lookups each), the classic signature of active robocall and text-scam campaigns.
- Houston's 281 shows the heaviest concentration in the country: 124 lookups aimed at just 21 distinct numbers, driven by a single delivery-scam number checked more than 90 times.

Methodology
This report aggregates 16,772 reverse phone lookups performed by StoryCheck users between May 29, 2026 and July 12, 2026. Only validated US and Canadian numbers are counted in area-code rankings. All figures are aggregates: per-number counts are published as ranges, individual numbers are listed only when they already have a public reputation page, and no personal information of any kind is included. Day-of-week figures use US Central Time.
