Information we collect

We collect the following categories of information:

  • Phone numbers, country codes, and the search inputs you submit.
  • Optional contextual answers you provide during a search.
  • Your email address and any optional details (such as an email address or image of a third party) you provide to enrich a report.
  • Payment information needed to complete checkout, collected and processed by our payment processor. StoryCheck does not store full card numbers.
  • Usage and device data, including IP address, browser, device identifiers, referral source, and pages visited, collected automatically through cookies and similar technologies.
  • Information we generate, including report results, confidence scores, and inferences derived from the above.
2

How we use information

We use the information we collect to:

  • Run phone-number searches against authorized data providers.
  • Deliver, store, secure, and improve your reports and the service.
  • Process payments, manage subscriptions, and detect and prevent fraud and abuse.
  • Estimate your approximate location from information such as your IP address or billing details to determine the prices, currency, and applicable taxes available to you. Prices may vary by location, so the price shown to you may differ from the price shown to users in other countries or regions.
  • Send you transactional messages and, where you have opted in, marketing communications.
  • Measure and improve our advertising, and maintain the quality, safety, and security of the service.
  • Comply with legal obligations and enforce our Terms of Service.
4

Cookies and tracking

We and our partners use cookies, pixels, and similar technologies (including the Meta Pixel and server-side conversion measurement) to operate the site, remember your preferences, measure conversions, and support advertising. You can control cookies through your browser settings; disabling some cookies may affect functionality.

How we share information

We do not sell your personal information for money. We share information only as described below:

  • Service providers and data partners (such as phone-intelligence, identity-enrichment, breach, and people-search providers) who process data on our behalf under contract.
  • AI infrastructure providers (currently Anthropic and OpenAI) that process content such as support messages and report source data on our behalf to power automated support and report generation. They do not use this data to train their models.
  • Payment processors, to complete and secure transactions.
  • Advertising and analytics partners, to measure and improve campaigns.
  • Authorities or other parties where required by law, to enforce our terms, or to protect the rights, safety, and property of StoryCheck, our users, or the public.
  • A successor entity in connection with a merger, acquisition, financing, or sale of assets.

A note on “sharing” for advertising

We use advertising technologies (including the Meta Pixel) that share certain identifiers and activity for cross-context behavioral advertising. Under California law, this can be considered a “sale” or “share” even though no money changes hands. You can opt out at any time, see Do Not Sell or Share below.

Artificial intelligence and automated processing

We use automated systems, including AI models, to operate StoryCheck:

  • Customer support. Automated systems read incoming support messages to understand the request, look up the matching account, take the requested action (such as cancelling a subscription), and write the reply. Messages you receive from support may be AI-generated.
  • Reports. The summaries, narrative text, confidence scores, and inferences in a report are generated automatically from the source data described in this policy.
  • Image screening. When gathering publicly linked images for a report, an AI model checks only whether an image contains a person, so logos and unrelated graphics are left out. We do not use facial recognition and do not attempt to identify who appears in an image.
  • Service improvement. We analyze usage patterns, session activity, and support volume in aggregate with AI tools to find and fix problems in the product.

To provide these features, we share the relevant content (for example, the text of a support message, or the source data used to build a report) with AI infrastructure providers, currently Anthropic and OpenAI, acting as service providers under contract. They process this data on our behalf to generate the output, and under our agreements with them they do not use it to train their models.

Automated outputs in reports are informational only, and we do not use them to make decisions that produce legal or similarly significant effects about you. To ask how an automated result was produced, to contest one, or to raise any concern about automated processing, contact support.

Do Not Sell or Share My Personal Information

California residents (and residents of other states with similar laws) have the right to opt out of the “sale” or “sharing” of personal information for cross-context behavioral advertising. To exercise this right for this browser, use the control below.

Do Not Sell or Share My Personal Information

Opt out of advertising cookies and pixels for this browser.

We honor Global Privacy Control (GPC). If your browser or a browser extension sends a GPC signal, we automatically treat it as a request to opt out of the sale and sharing of your personal information and do not load advertising pixels for that browser. Because the opt-out is stored per browser/device, you may need to repeat it on other browsers or after clearing your cookies. To make an opt-out request through another channel, contact support.

8

Data accuracy and sources

Results are informational only

Report data is drawn from third-party providers, public records, and user inputs. This information may be incomplete, inaccurate, outdated, or associated with the wrong person, and StoryCheck does not independently verify it. Results are informational only. StoryCheck does not guarantee identity ownership and is not a consumer reporting agency under the Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA). See our full disclaimer.

9

Data retention

We retain personal information for as long as needed to provide the service, comply with legal obligations, resolve disputes, and enforce our agreements. Reports are typically available in your account for a limited period and may be deleted thereafter. We may retain de-identified or aggregated data indefinitely.

10

Your choices and rights

Depending on your location, you may have rights to access, correct, delete, or restrict the processing of your personal data, to opt out of certain sharing, to data portability, and to withdraw consent.

You can exercise these rights, including access and deletion requests, by contacting support. We will verify your request and respond as required by applicable law, including the CCPA/CPRA (California) and GDPR (EEA/UK) where they apply. We will not discriminate against you for exercising your rights.

11

International data transfers

StoryCheck is operated from the United States, and information we collect may be processed in and transferred to the United States and other countries that may have data-protection laws different from those in your jurisdiction. Where required, we rely on appropriate safeguards (such as Standard Contractual Clauses) for cross-border transfers.

12

Children's privacy

StoryCheck is intended only for adults aged 18 and older. We do not knowingly collect personal information from anyone under 18. If you believe a minor has provided us information, contact support and we will delete it.

13

Security

We use reasonable administrative, technical, and organizational measures to protect personal information. However, no method of transmission or storage is completely secure, and we cannot guarantee absolute security.

14

Changes to this policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. Material changes will be reflected by updating the date above, and your continued use of the service after a change constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.
