Is this number a scam?

Almost every scam gives itself away through the same handful of signals, whatever story is being told. One signal on its own proves nothing. Two together are enough to hang up and ring back yourself.
The signals
| Signal | What it means |
|---|---|
| Pressure to act immediately | The single most reliable signal |
| Asking for the code sent to you by text | An attempt to get into your account. No bank ever asks for it |
| Offering to move money to a "secure account" | No such thing exists. This is the scam itself |
| A single ring from a foreign code | Wangiri. The charge lands on your call back, not on theirs |
| Asking you to install remote access software | That is control of your device and your online banking |
| Payment by transfer, gift card or cryptocurrency | No genuine organisation collects this way |
If something has already happened
- Ring your bank immediately on the number printed on your card, not one given to you by a caller.
- Change passwords, especially for online banking and email.
- Save screenshots and the number before you block it.
- Report the fraud to An Garda Síochána.
- Report nuisance calls, spoofing or premium-rate misuse to ComReg.
Caller ID can be faked, so a call showing your bank's real number proves nothing. Hanging up and dialling the number on your own card is what actually settles it.
Common questions
Will my bank ever ask me to move money to a secure account?
No. Secure holding accounts do not exist. Any caller offering to move your money to one is running a scam, whatever number is showing on your screen.
Should I ring back a missed call from an international number?
No, not one you do not recognise. That is exactly how wangiri works: the call back connects to a premium line abroad and is billed at a high rate.
Where do I report a scam in Ireland?
Report fraud to An Garda Síochána, and nuisance calls, spoofing or premium-rate misuse to ComReg. Ring your bank first if money has already moved.
